Learning spanish - part 3 - taking your first steps

In the last article I talked about mental preparation. If you are thinking about learning Spanish then it makes sense to think carefully about what you hope to achieve and how you hope to achieve it. This is because the learning process is likely to be a long one and full of trials and tribulations. It is wise not to underestimate yourself.

In this article I’m going to talk about what I did when I was first thinking about learning Spanish. That was about four years ago now. At the time I knew nothing of the Spanish language, so for me it was a case of starting right from the very beginning.

My concepts of how other languages worked were really very basic. I thought all I had to do was to take any English word and simply learn what the equivalent word in Spanish was. Therefore I could simply put the words together and hey presto I would have a complete sentence. It didn’t’ take me long to realise that this basic theory rarely works!

For example, "I always buy strong coffee". In Spanish, " siempre compro cafй fuerte". In this sentence there appears to be no Spanish word for "I" and the word for "coffee (cafй)" comes before the word for "strong (fuerte)". This is only a simple example but it shows how my basic theory falls down. The Spanish word for "I" is "yo", but it is often not used in Spanish sentences because the construction of the verb it is used with already tells us that "I" is being referred to "compro = I buy". Secondly, in Spanish, adjectives usually come after the nouns that they are used with whereas in English they usually come before them. "strong coffee = cafй fuerte".

If you know nothing about Spanish as I didn’t then you might already be a little confused. At this stage it probably isn’t worth thinking too much about how the structure of the English and Spanish languages might differ. You will simply come to realise these differences as you progress through your studies. However, I think it is important to remind yourself right from the very beginning that learning Spanish won’t be as easy as simply matching English and Spanish words!

Of course if you don’t know any Spanish words then you are not going to be able to make any sentences, regardless if they are grammatically correct or not. You need to start learning some words and phrases. Try thinking about some of the most common every day phrases in English.

You could start by learning some common greetings for example - hello (hola) goodbye (adiуs), good morning (buenos dнas), good afternoon (buenas tardes). In these examples you might have noticed that the translation of the English word used for "good" is both "buenos" and "buenas". This is because one is masculine and the other is feminine!! If you are not sure what I am talking about then don’t worry. I will talk much more about gender in later articles.

The point here is that when learning new Spanish words or phrases you are probably going to notice differences in the way they are used that you don’t fully understand. If you are anything like me you will always be asking yourself “why?” My advice is not to get too bogged down in trying to understand these things too quickly. It will probably just frustrate you!

As well as learning useful words and phrases you of course need to make sure that you can pronounce them correctly! The only way you can do this is by hearing some examples. It is important to make sure you pronounce Spanish words correctly right from the beginning. If you don’t then you will pick up bad habits that will become more difficult to shake off later on.

Spanish pronunciation is something you will probably want to study separately during your studies. It is a good idea to do this early on. The good news is that Spanish pronunciation is far less complicated than English pronunciation. I will be discussing this in more detail in later articles.

So, you need to start learning new Spanish words and phrases whilst making sure that you pronounce them correctly. When I first started learning Spanish I bought a basic level Spanish text book. I had about a six weeks before I was about to embark on a long trip to Central and South America and my goal was to finish the book before the six weeks was up. One of the first things the book taught me was how to introduce myself by saying what my name was and where I was from. It came with CD’s so that I was able to check my pronunciation.

In the next article I will talk more about my early studies and some of the pitfalls I encountered whilst trying to plough through a basic level text book in six weeks. I will also talk about the different ways you might want to think about how learning Spanish best works for you. Buying a text book might not suit you. Buying a franchise... think twice at least

If 2007 is like the past several years, over 65,000 new franchises will be sold in the U. S. and Canada, one every 8 minutes! More and more displaced, outplaced, disgruntled or disappointed people are looking at franchising as a solution to their Career Pains. Whether insecurity, financial limitations, corporate politics, life balance or any one of many such pains, they feel “There must be something better out there”. And they may be right.

However, too many people who take the step to business/franchise ownership find out too late that their problems as business owners are more serious than any they faced as employees. No income, a constant drain on savings, a disappearing vision of success and long, long hours are just a few of the factors that make some new business owners wish they had never taken that step. Franchise ownership offers no guarantee of success.

In my business, working with people who are considering buying a franchise, I am often asked “What are the biggest reasons people fail?” And some of these people listen intently, then go off on their own and completely disregard what they have been told. I have actually had people say to me, “Well, I can see how that is true for most people but…..” and then go on to say how “different” they are; how their experience or intelligence or “connections” will make them immune to these issues.

Part of the reason for being unable to grasp the importance of what they are told is that the reasons for failure, on the surface, sound so simple. As an example, reason #1 “People don’t know what they want”, makes the buyer seem pretty stupid. However, it is easy (and natural) to have an idealized vision of a business based on information that is completely invalid for you; the fact that a neighbor or relative is successful; that a particular franchise is “hot”, or perhaps the business is seen as an extension of a hobby you have always enjoyed. Because it seems so simple, people assume they have their answers and go forward, only to find out, too late, what they should have known. It is only when the reasons for failure are examined closely and deeply that one can understand how very intelligent, successful people make these mistakes.

1. “People don’t know what they want”

Prospective franchisees need to spend a great deal of time compiling a list of attributes that complete this sentence: “To meet my personal and professional goals, my business must…….”. This list must go much further than “enable me to make $100,000/year” It should include issues such as “provide time with family”, “offer a creative outlet”, “allow me to manage the business, not run it day-to-day”, etc. Until that list is complete, they really do not know what they want and can not possibly begin looking.

2. “People don’t know what they are buying”

With the above list in hand, prospective buyers now have questions for franchisors and franchisees of the prospective franchise that focus on their specific issues. The calls to the franchisees are of utmost importance; these are the people who know the realities of that particular business and the best source of information on what you’re really buying. This step must not be skipped.

3. “People run out of money”

Even though the Uniform Franchise Offering Circular (required by the FTC to be given to prospective franchisees) is fairly specific in terms of the capital needed to get the business up and running (The Total Investment), without discussions with many franchisees who have done it, many new franchisees just run out of money. Find out from franchisees (1.) how long it took to get to “break even” and (2.) if the Total Investment in the UFOC proved to be valid. Do not assume you can get to break-even sooner than the average or that you can get by with less capital. You cannot!

4. “People don’t use the system for which they paid money”

Usually, people seeking their own business have been successful in their previous careers. Unfortunately, that success seems to breed an attitude that “I know a better way”. So, in spite of having paid tens of thousands of dollars for a successful business system, many new franchisees do not follow that system and they fail. The best advice is “Follow the system to the letter until you are successful; then you may have the luxury of innovation.

5. “People don’t know how hard it is going to be”

It seems that no matter what they are told, people always under-estimate how hard it is going to be to start their business. As one who has done it several times, take my advice “This is going to be harder than you imagined”. You may be smarter, more experienced, more talented than most. It will still be harder than you think.

In closing, it should be noted that after I give the “Harder then you think” advice, I always follow with “but if you are successful, owning your own business can reward you beyond your wildest expectations”. That is, after all, why we do it.

Visiting with the pediatrician what to expect

In the first year of your baby’s life, you will be visiting your pediatrician about every other month, for well check ups and immunizations. Here’s a rundown of how those visits go, and approximately how often you’ll need to visit.

Two week visit

Some doctors schedule a visit earlier than two weeks, but most pediatricians begin at the two week mark. Your baby’s weight, length and head circumference will be measured, and you can expect this at every well baby checkup during this first year. They will also do a general exam and check the baby’s fontanel. One thing the doctor particularly interested in at this checkup is baby’s weight gain. Your baby will typically lose some weight right after birth, so at this checkup the doctor will want to ensure that baby is gaining back the lost weight. One month visit

This visit will be largely the same as the previous visit, focusing on baby’s development, and on yours and baby’s adjustment at home.

Two month visit

Baby will be checked again, and immunizations will usually start at the two month mark. The first dose of the DPT – (diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis) vaccine is usually administered at this visit. For more information about when immunizations are administered, see the chapter on this subject.

From this point on, you can expect well baby visits every other month, until your baby is a year old. There will routine physical exams, and questions about your baby’s development. For the first year of life, the baby will receive immunizations at nearly every visit. These visits are not only important opportunities for the doctor to check on your baby’s progress, but are also opportunities for you to ask questions and gain reassurance about how things are going, so take advantage. For instance, if you are concerned that your child has not reached a development milestone, these visits are a good time to discuss this with your doctor. Your doctor will also be looking for these development milestones, and will alert you if there is an issue. It’s helpful to write your questions down as you think of them, so you don’t forget.

Although this sounds very simplistic, and it is, its calculation is a little more involved.

2. At the start of the season each team is given 1000 points.

3. When a match is played both teams contribute some of their points towards a kitty.

4. The home team supply more points into the kitty than the away team. This is done to reflect the home teams advantage of playing at home.

5. The winning team takes the kitty, unless the result is a draw in which case both sides share the points. In the case of a draw the away side gains points and the home side looses points.

Here is how a typical calculation is made…

home team points total = HTPOINTS

away team points total = ATPOINTS

home team contribution to kitty = HTKITTY = 7% of HTPOINTS

away team contribution to kitty = ATKITTY = 5% of ATPOINTS

the kitty therefore = KITTY = HTKITTY + ATKITTY

if the result is a HOME WIN then

home team receives KITTY points added to HTPOINTS

away team receives zero points added to ATPOINTS and looses its 5% contribution to the kitty

if result is an AWAY WIN then

home team receives zero points added to HTPOINTS and looses its 7% contribution to the kitty

away team receives KITTY points added to ATPOINTS

if the result is a DRAW then

home team receives KITTY / 2 points added to HTPOINTS

away team receives KITTY / 2 points added to ATPOINTS

Let’s look at a simple example of how you could apply this…

To calculate the possible outcome of a match based on rateform the away rateform is subtracted from the home rateform and the difference is compared against set values for home, away and draw possibilities.

For example we could make our set values as follows:

AWAY WIN -250 DRAW 150 HOME WIN

RATEFORM DIFFERENCE = HOME TEAM RATEFORM – AWAY TEAM RATEFORM

So, if the RATEFORM DIFFERENCE is less than -250 then the match is likely to be an away win, if the RATEFORM DIFFERENCE is greater than 150 then the match is likely to be a home win, and if the RATEFORM DIFFERENCE lies between then the outcome is most likely to be a draw.

Now it’s your turn…

Of course you may choose to use different values to those shown above and by experimenting you may come up with better values to use. You could also decide not to reset each teams points to 1000 at the start of the season but instead let them carry over into the next season. Another alternative would be to have a rolling calculation where you calculate the rateform for each team on say the last six months.

If you have the necessary skills you could go away and build your own spreadsheet of data or even write a piece of software to take in results and fixtures and apply the Rateform method to your data.
